Welcome to Water and Food in Africa

Welcome to my blog, it’s great to have you here so that we can explore the topic of food and water in Africa together!

Humanity has evolved throughout time to become the undoubtable king of the food chain. This is so much so that we find ourselves consuming unsustainable quantities of certain food stocks which is leading to their depletion in the natural environment.

Marten (2001) in his book on Human ecology writes comprehensively about the interactions which occur between the ‘social systems’ of humanity and the ecosystems which surround it. It is undoubtedly true that our human environment is manipulated by the physical characteristics of the environment which surround it (Marten, 2001). More specifically, in this blog I am going to focus on how climate change is going to impact food and water in Africa going forward. I feel a lot of passion towards climate change and how it will manipulate the physical geographies of water across Africa and in turn the continents resultant food production.

My approach will be to explore the physical geographies that determine Africa’s relationships with freshwater more broadly and then zooming in to use more specific and localised case study examples. After this I aim to emphasise my belief that the extent to which food and water in Africa is negatively impacted by climate change depends heavily on how the continent understands and chooses to adapt to these changing patterns.

Food and water in Africa is a very important topic which takes a step towards the aim of alleviating world poverty and I hope that you can join me on this journey so that together we can increase our knowledge on food and water in Africa and make an impact today rather than tomorrow!

  1. Very interesting first blog post! I like the style of writing you use - you take the reader on a journey with you. A suggestion would be to try bring out your main argument more from the start and signpost the main purpose of the blog and its significance. As you blog is on water and development in Africa, perhaps start with evidence that is directly supports this points.

See the FAQs (Task 1.1.) on the Moodle page to see how to reference using hyperlinks.

  2. Hi there Konstantine. Sorry for only reading this blog now. This is a great beginning. You clearly highlight what this blog will entail, enabling me to paint a picture of what's to come. I feel you could a bit more context to describe the importance of water/food to Africa maybe some statistics to show how important it is to them. Otherwise, great stuff. I look forward to reading this blog in the next few hours!
